Abstract:
The aim of the article is to substantiate a methodological approach to calculating operating costs based on the specifics of technology and production organization. To achieve this aim, it is necessary to address a number of intermediate objectives: analyzing existing approaches to calculating operating costs provided by the current accounting methodology; studying the impact of technological features of the production process on the procedure for determining costs; identifying the shortcomings and advantages of known methodological approaches to calculating operating costs; developing, based on the solutions of the previous objectives, a methodological approach that consolidates the advantages of known approaches to calculating operating costs for substantiating the economic indicators of an investment project. Using the example of direct iron reduction technology, the article examines methodological approaches to determining operating costs taking into account the specifics of technological processes and production organization. The essence of two cost determination approaches provided by the current accounting methodology has been analyzed: cost calculation by economic elements and calculation based on the determination of the production cost of individual products sold. The advantages and disadvantages of each considered approach have been reviewed. The calculation approach involves determining the cost of individual products, which provides opportunities for planning the assortment already at the design stage. However, obtaining such data requires a series of intermediate calculations and addressing a number of methodological issues (classification of products into main and by-products, identification of cost objects, determination of the calculation sequence). The estimation approach does not provide information on individual products but allows determining the operating costs of the enterprise as a whole. At the same time, the application of this approach requires the collection of a substantial amount of information, including costs that are minor relative to the total costs. Based on the study, an original approach has been proposed – a modified cost estimation method that takes into account the advantages of both existing approaches and allows for consideration of technological features while simultaneously simplifying intermediate calculations.
