Abstract:
The aim of the article is to assess the state of wood waste recycling in Ukraine and the world. Based on a bibliometric analysis of publications indexed in the Scopus database, the key thematic directions and temporal patterns in the development of scientific discourse on wood waste recycling are summarized. It is determined that research on wood waste recycling is interdisciplinary in nature and focuses on the intersection of environmental sciences, energy, engineering, and business management. The leading countries in terms of the number of publications are China, India, and the United Kingdom. The most frequently used keywords in the relevant publications are: circular economy, sustainable development, sustainability, biomass, waste management, which most accurately reflect the drivers of research in this field. The feasibility of increasing the cascading use of wood in Ukraine is proved. The state of wood waste processing in Ukraine and other countries of the world was assessed for secondary wood processing and energy use of biomass using the following indicators: the share of renewable wood in the total volume of secondary raw materials; the share of waste in industrial roundwood; the share of charcoal in the energy use of wood; the share of wood pellets in the energy use of wood; the share of wood briquettes and other agglomerates in the energy use of wood. The analysis showed that Ukraine’s woodworking industry has a low level of secondary wood processing indicators. One of the key obstacles to increasing the processing of wood waste is the additional costs of sorting, implementing technological solutions in business processes, and logistics. A sequence of stages for processing wood waste is proposed, which includes tracking the origin of the waste at the initial stage, and during further processing – the level of contamination, toxicity, and the presence of prohibited components, which allows obtaining complete raw materials for further use or production of solid biofuel, contributes to increasing the level of circularity in the wood processing industry, and ensures the country’s environmental and energy security.

Keywords: wood waste; circular economy; cascade use of wood; secondary wood processing; energy use of biomass.
