Abstract:
Climate change in Polissia cannot be reduced to a simple linear decrease or increase in annual precipitation; its impact on land resources is determined primarily by the seasonal and intra-seasonal redistribution of moisture, the increasing frequency of short-term intense rainfall events, longer rainless periods, and rising temperature stress. The aim of the study is to identify, prioritize, and interpret the risks of land resource degradation in the Polissia region of Ukraine (using the Volyn region as a case study), taking into account the spatial differentiation of landscape and soil cover, the structure of agricultural production, and the condition of water regulation infrastructure. The information base of the study included the Regional Environmental Report of the Volyn Region for 2024, the scientific works of I. P. Kovalchuk, V. O. Fesiuk, and T. S. Pavlovska, as well as contemporary studies on the hydrological regime of the Styr River. The study employed systemic, landscape-ecological, risk-oriented, comparative geographical, and documentary-analytical methods. It is substantiated that the priority risks include: rainfall-induced soil erosion on the slopes of the Volyn Upland underlain by thick loess and loess-like deposits; deflation and desiccation of the light-textured soils of Polissia; pyrogenic degradation of over-drained peatlands; flooding and waterlogging of crops in floodplains; declining soil fertility under simplified crop rotation systems; and the institutional and infrastructural dysfunction of land reclamation systems. The scientific novelty lies in the integrated consideration of natural-climatic, soil-landscape, production, and institutional factors within a unified framework for assessing the risks of deterioration in the geoecological condition of land resources. The practical significance of the study lies in the development of targeted principles for adaptive land use, differentiated according to land types and the dominant mechanisms of land degradation, while taking into account the impacts of changing climatic conditions.
