Abstract:
The recognition of the significant role of knowledge in business management has grown over the past decades due to rapid digitalization and technologization of the economy. The value of organizational knowledge is reflected in its unique capability to ensure superprofits and a competitive advantage for a company in the market. The conceptual models of organizational knowledge management discussed in the article allowed for the identification of areas and directions for the development of appropriate methodical support for the use, acquisition, accumulation, distribution, and integration of knowledge into management and development processes. The article demonstrates that, from a resource-based perspective, organizational knowledge constitutes a strategic resource for a company, comprised of skills, experience, and competence at the individual, collective, or organizational (corporate) levels. The behavioral approach highlights the strategic actions of an enterprise as a result of utilizing organizational knowledge, integrating both psychological and cognitive aspects, and draws researchers’ attention to managers’ behavioral competencies, personal and collective abilities (leadership qualities, business intuition). Thanks to a systematic approach in the theory of organizational knowledge, a research field has developed, represented by constructs of organizational and managerial cognition through which managers and other organizational actors shape a systemic vision, thinking, strategic decision-making, and the enterprise’s objectives. The institutional approach is reflected in theoretical models that define an enterprise as an institution specifically designed to protect knowledge from competitors’ encroachments: a learning organization; an institution that creates and integrates knowledge. Thus, interdisciplinary research creates the conditions, approaches, and tools for building the theory of knowledge management.
